Woman gets new lease of life post knee microplasty at Max Hospital

Chandigarh: A-fifty-year-old woman from Patiala got a new lease of life after a successful knee microplasty (c) at Max Hospital, Mohali recently.

For the past few years, she was unable to perform her daily routine work due to lack of walking and was completely dependent on her family members.

After a thorough evaluation by Dr Jatinder Singla director orthopedics & joint replacement, she underwent microplasty instead of total knee replacement.

Talking about the case Dr. Singla said, “Less invasive or partial knee replacement does address arthritis which is present precisely in the compartment of the knee which is already affected. Moreover, a knee that has undergone such a procedure is generally found to be rebalanced afterward, which helps improve its stability. While no one can guarantee that arthritis never progresses anywhere else in the knee, it is still a rare occurrence. However, if arthritis progresses, the patient might need a surgical revision or a total knee replacement.”

He further elaborated that both procedures are meant to mitigate chronic knee pain due to arthritis.

“Both these surgeries require putting in place prosthetic knee joint components by first cutting off the bone and soft tissue. Studies show short-term functional outcomes are good where the patients tend to experience less pain after surgery and regain the use of their knees in a comparatively shorter period. Microplasty allows an easier post-surgical recovery, while in the long term, it provides equal or sometimes better results.”

Two weeks post-surgery, the woman was completely able to live her normal life by performing all routine work. Now she can walk freely without any pain and with anybody’s help.
