    Crossing the thin line

There could be many reasons behind J&K DGP’s controversial remark claiming that Kashmir-based political parties were cultivating terrorist network leaders for electoral gains as lately the top cop’s performance chart is in question due to unprecedented spate in the terrorist activities in the Union Territory’s Jammu province which conventionally was considered to be largely peaceful even during the prime of insurgency in the region.

The statement made by the person in command could be an attempt to divert the attention of the people from the rising graph of terrorism in Jammu region because the situation has turned so grim that the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has to review the security situation in UT particularly in the Jammu region which has witnessed spurt in terror attacks in the past over a month.

This is not enough, as last month also, the Prime Minister had chaired a review meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval besides other senior officers on Jammu and Kashmir situation.

The aforesaid statement of DGP which has sparked a controversy in J&K with PDP chief and former chief minister of the erstwhile State of J&K demanding his ouster has lead to ADGP’s clarification over the issue by going public and saying that J&K police is an apolitical and professional police force that works impartially and the DGP’s aforesaid remark might be his personal opinion.

The NC leadership and People’s Conference representative have also condemned the top cop’s statement in strong words thus making it necessary for the cops in the UT to show restraint and act maturely when it comes to going public.

If the man at the Centre of controversy has got evidence of what he was been claiming, he should have proceeded under the realms of the law of the land to take the wrongdoers head on because police is not meant for raking conflicts and controversies rather it is there to implement law and order, that too by remaining under the contours of legal framework.
