Dermatologists debunk popular home remedy for removing tan, emphasize safety over quick fixes

    Date:

Summer months often result in tan lines and darker skin on exposed areas like the face, neck and arms. While tan fades with time, many look for quick fixes to remove it instantly. One such ‘remedy' shared on social media gaining popularity suggests using a concoction of body wash, baking soda, coffee and citrus. However, dermatologists have reservations about the effectiveness and safety of such DIY solutions.

Skin experts explain that tan occurs due to the body's natural response to protect itself from harmful UV rays. Melanin production increases in areas exposed to sun, darkening the skin tone. It usually takes 2-3 months for tan to fade naturally. Though home remedies offer inexpensive solutions, their ability to remove tan is questionable and they may irritate sensitive skin.

Dr. Rinky Kapoor, a renowned dermatologist, notes little backing claims of ingredients like baking soda and coffee. Their high pH and acids could dry out or inflame skin. Those with sensitivity need caution. While coffee may exfoliate, evidence is lacking on tan removal. It is wise to consult experts before random social media recommendations.

Dr. Niti Gaur also downplays assumptions that DIY therapies work like professional procedures. The skin requires gentle care, not harsh products not meant for it. Regular sunscreen application remains key to preventing tan says Dr. Kiran Singh. While laser treatments effectively remove tan, social trends should not replace expert opinion on skin . This summer, prioritize natural fading over questionable remedies for a quicker tan fix.
