Mediatek unveils powerful AI capabilities of upcoming Dimensity 9300+ chip
At the recent Computex 2024 event held in Taipei, Taiwan, mobile chip maker Mediatek shed light on the impressive artificial intelligence abilities of their next-generation smartphone processor. Rick Tsai, CEO of Mediatek, spoke about how the upcoming Dimensity 9300+ chip will be able to deliver AI performance on par with high-end desktop computers.
Tsai stated that the Dimensity 9300+ features a neural processing unit (NPU) that can handle up to 48 trillion operations per second (TOPs) of AI tasks such as image and speech recognition. This places it above competitors and matches capability requirements for powerful personal computers. The chip will allow for on-device experiences like AI photo editing and animation generation in real-time without an internet connection.
Impressively, Tsai touted that a smartphone running the 9300+ chip could match the generative AI skills of Intel's state-of-the-art Lunar Lake laptop processor. This implies portable devices of the future may hold comparable computational abilities to desktops. Mediatek also showcased automobile and cloud computing processors in development that push AI processing limits even higher.
With over 22 billion transistors packed into its 4nm design, the Dimensity 9300+ clearly aims to dominate the mobile AI space. Mediatek is firmly focused on proliferating generative artificial intelligence experiences through ubiquitous chips in phones, vehicles, servers and more. The demonstrations at Computex provide a glimpse at the powerful on-device neural capabilities that could soon be at our fingertips.
