Dhoni asked to stay for another season to mentor young CSK captain Gaikwad
While Chennai Super Kings' campaign in IPL 2024 ended with a loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore, questions have been raised over the future of the franchise's iconic skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Speculations are rife about whether the 2024 edition was the last for Dhoni, who has been leading CSK loyally since the inception of the league.
However, Suresh Raina – a former India batsman and Dhoni's trusted lieutenant at CSK – feels the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman still has a role to play. Raina stated that the new CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad requires more time and guidance to develop into a leader.
Gaikwad had taken over the reins from Dhoni midway through IPL 2023 after the latter decided to hand over the captaincy. While Gaikwad led the team adeptly, steering them to the final, Raina believes one more season under Dhoni's tutelage will help the youngster grow into a mature captain.
The injuries and absence of key players impacted CSK's performance in 2024 as they finished outside the top four. However, Gaikwad showed promise with both bat and guidance on the field. But with Dhoni considering retirement, his mentorship could prove invaluable for the future CSK leader in what might be the team icon's final season.
A decision awaited from Dhoni will be keenly watched by the passionate Chennai fanbase as they hope their beloved ‘Thala' has one final chance to help nurture his successor Ruturaj Gaikwad.
