Srinagar, Apr 2: In the latest episode of Udhampur Lok Sabha Elections, the stage was set for a potential upset as dozens of small parties, including prominent regional ones boarded the election boats. However, history proved relentless as none managed to cross the established dominance of Congress and BJP.
Despite spirited attempts by regional parties from other states, the Udhampur parliamentary constituency, spanning six districts of Jammu and Kashmir, has remained impervious to their influence. Over the course of 14 Lok Sabha elections since 1967, the electorate has consistently favored candidates from Congress and BJP, relegating regional contenders to the sidelines.
From its inception, Udhampur constituency has steadfastly resisted representation by regional parties. In a historical reflection, the early years saw Congress asserting its stronghold, only to be later supplanted by BJP’s ascendancy. While some regional parties managed to secure second or third positions, none could establish a substantial foothold.
The trajectory of the constituency’s political landscape witnessed Congress’s dominance for six consecutive terms until BJP emerged victorious in 1996. Since then, BJP has maintained its grip on the seat clinching successive wins in 2014 and 2019, defeating stalwarts from Congress.
In the annals of Udhampur’s electoral history, Congress has clinched victory eight times, closely followed by BJP’s six triumphs, solidifying the duopoly of the two major players. Meanwhile, regional contenders such as National Conference, PDP and Panthers Party have been relegated to secondary positions, unable to break the entrenched dominance of Congress and BJP. Despite the influx of small parties vying for attention, the electorate’s loyalty remains steadfast, reaffirming the entrenched political dynamics of the region. This time, a new regional party, DPAP lead by Ghulam Nabi Azad is also trying their luck.
