    JKDMA issues avalanche warning for 5 districts of J&K

    Srinagar, Mar 4: Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) on Monday issued an avalanche warning in the higher reaches of five districts of Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours, officials said.

    An avalanche with a “medium danger” level is likely to occur above 2200 metres over Kishtwar in the Jammu division and Kupwara, Bandipora, and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir in next 24 hours.

    A “high danger” level avalanche is likely to occur above 2200 metres over central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district during the next 24 hours.

    People living in these areas have been advised to take precautions and avoid venturing into the avalanche-prone areas till further orders.

    Upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received moderate to heavy snowfall recently prompting authorities to issue a fresh avalanche warning as a precautionary measure for the people on Monday.

    The authorities have also asked the people living in these districts to dial 112 for help in case of any emergency.

    Govt to present special cash award to medalists under ‘Sports Policy’

    Jammu, Mar 4: In a first, the Jammu and Kashmir administration under ‘J&K Sports Policy-2022’ will present a special cash award to the medal-winning athletes.

    Credible sources in the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council told UNI, “Under the 2022 Sports Policy, the medal winners (national and international) will be presented with the cash award at a ceremony scheduled to be held very soon.”

    Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also president of the J&K Sports Council, will present the awards at the ceremony.

    “The athletes from the years 2021–22 and 2022–23 will be given the cash award for their outstanding performances at national and international levels,” sources said.

    The awards, sources said, are already approved by the Lieutenant Governor.

    They said that the athletes (around 400) from the disciplines of gymnastics, fencing, wushu, pencak silat, boxing, judo, volleyball, powerlifting, roller skating, and canoeing will be given cash awards.

    However, athletes are elated for the ceremony and have welcomed the decision of the administration.

    “The date for holding the ceremony is not yet finalized but is expected very soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Srinagar visit,” they added.
