    New Delhi, August 26 : A CBI court here on Friday sentenced INLD leader Satbir Singh Kadian, who has been Speaker of the Haryana Assembly, to seven years in jail for committing irregularities in the procurement by Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) Ltd when he was heading the organisation in 1989-91.

    Judge Jitendra Kumar Mishra also gave similar jail terms to three other convicts involved in the scam. They are Vinayak Narayan, Anil Malhotra and Sunil Gora. The fifth convict, KB Pandey, was awarded a 2-year sentence.

    The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50 lakh on Kadian and Malhotra, Rs 25 lakh on Gora, Rs 5 lakh on Narayan and Rs 50,000 on Pandey. The CBI had registered the FIR in 1993 under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

    The convicts had illegally favoured some companies in Gujarat and Maharashtra in the award of contracts. The late leader Devi Lal had appointed Kadyan as IFFCO Chairman when he was Deputy Prime Minister.
