SHIMLA, July 4: At least 63 people have died and dozens are missing as relentless monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh, triggering flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts, officials confirmed Thursday.
A heavy rain alert remains in effect across all districts until Monday, July 7, with authorities intensifying relief, rescue, and restoration efforts, especially in the worst-hit Mandi district.
“We have recorded over ₹400 crore in losses so far, but the actual damage is likely much higher,” said DC Rana, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority. “Our current focus is on search, rescue, and restoration.”
Mandi alone has reported 17 deaths and over 40 people are still missing. Kangra reported 13 fatalities, followed by six in Chamba and five in Shimla. Deaths have also been confirmed in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Sirmaur, Solan, and Una. More than 100 people have been injured statewide.
Entire villages have been ravaged. Hundreds of homes have collapsed, and 14 bridges have been washed away. Over 500 roads remain closed, and more than 500 electricity transformers are non-functional, cutting off power to tens of thousands. The destruction has also killed nearly 300 livestock, including 164 cattle.
Authorities warn of an emerging humanitarian crisis as shortages of food and drinking water grip many areas. Visuals circulating online show swollen rivers turning into destructive torrents, sweeping away homes and farmland. Videos from Mandi and Shimla’s Dhalli suburb reveal devastating landslides and debris-covered towns.
The monsoon entered the state on June 20, and as in past years, has caused widespread damage. A full assessment is still underway, officials said, and more rainfall is expected in the coming days. (Agencies)
