Chandigarh, Nov 18: The Border Security Force (BSF) has neutralized 255 drones originating from Pakistan so far this year, used primarily to smuggle heroin and weapons across the border, a senior BSF Punjab Frontier official said.
With the fog season approaching, the BSF has intensified surveillance to curb cross-border smuggling attempts. BSF Inspector General Atul Fulzele said reduced visibility during fog makes it easier for smugglers to operate drones, prompting the force to deploy specialised surveillance equipment and strengthen monitoring of riverine belts.
Fulzele added that BSF personnel are also keeping close watch on individuals approaching border areas to retrieve drone-dropped consignments. Joint checks with Punjab Police will continue on roads leading to the border to deter smuggling attempts.
The BSF recently reported intercepting 251 drones and recovering 329 kg of heroin, 16 kg of ICE (methamphetamine), 191 weapons, 12 grenades and over 10 kg of explosives till November 14. The force has also neutralised three Pakistani intruders and arrested 240 Indian smugglers and 19 Pakistani nationals linked to cross-border crimes.
On Monday, BSF personnel recovered 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition near Muthiawala village in Ferozepur. (Agencies)
