2 Army officers killed, 5 Personnel Injured In Poonch Blast

An Army captain and a JCO were killed in an accidental grenade blast along the Line of Control in Jammu and 's Poonch district, officials said on Monday.

The Army personnel were on duty when the incident took place in the Mendhar sector of Poonch late on Sunday night, an Army PRO here said.

The Army captain Anand and the naib-subedar (JCO) Bhagwan Singh were immediately taken to Udhampur for treatment on a helicopter, he said. During the treatment, they succumbed to their injuries.

Anand was a resident of Champa Nagar in Bihar's Bhagalpur and Naib Subedar Bhagwan Singh belonged to village Pokhar Bhitta in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier police on Monday recovered 6Kgs of Improvised Explosive Device material on Jammu-Srinagar Highway from a person in Kashmir.

In a handout a police spokesperson said that police on technical inputs arrested one person, Zahid Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Aaziz Mir of Aripanath Beerwah Budgam. During examination, he disclosed having hidden IED material and police team recovery P3 type explosive material (weighing approximately 06 kg), one Electric detonator and around 500 gms of ball bearings and nails. “These Ball bearings & nails were to be used as projectiles/ shrapnels during blast,” he added.

The police spokesman said that the explosive substance was recovered near a petrol pump located on highway. “The explosive substance recovered was meant for the manufacture of IEDs, so as to target the security forces deployed on the Highway”.

In this regards, he said, a case under FIR No 99/2022 has been registered at Batmaloo police station under section 13, 23, 38, 39 of UAPA and 3/5 of Explosive Substances Act, reads the statement.
