    16 detained from drug hotspots, sent to district jail

    Jammu Tawi, Dec 26: Sixteen people were detained by police from drug-related hotspots in Samba district on Friday, officials said.

    Acting on a tip-off, police carried out an operation in areas prone to drug-related activities at Rakh Barotian in Vijaypur tehsil, where some homeless people were found wandering suspiciously, they said.

    Police said continuing its drive against smugglers and peddlers, they have arrested a drug peddler in Samba and recovered approximately 9.86 grams of heroin from his possession.

    Acting on information received from reliable sources, police said a team of Police Station Samba established a special vehicle checking naka near Bhargav Degree College Samba and intercepted a motorcycle for its checking which was coming from Vijaypur side.

    During frisking, approximately 9.86 grams of heroin was recovered from the possession of the motorcyclist, said police.

    They said that a peddler identified as Mohd Sharif of Narsoo Samroli, district Udhampur, presently at Miran Sahib, district Jammu has been arrested and contraband item has been seized.

    They detained 16 people under preventive sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and lodged them in district jail Kathua, the officials said.

    The action was taken as part of efforts to curb drug-related activities in the area, they said.

    Reiterating its commitment to eliminate the drug menace, police said strict action would continue against those involved in drug peddling and abuse.
