Prayagraj, Feb 15: Ten people were killed and 19 others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and an SUV in the Meja area of Prayagraj district in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said here on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Yamuna Nagar) Vivek Chandra Yadav said that the incident took place late on Saturday night when devotees from Korba in Chhattisgarh were going to take bath in Prayagraj Mahakumbh in the SUV.
He said near Manupura village on the National Highway the SUV collided head-on with the bus going towards Prayagraj. “All 10 people travelling in the SUV were killed on the spot. The bus passengers also got injured and were sent to their destination after first aid,” he said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the accident and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He directed the officials to immediately reach the spot and expedite the relief work and directed the district administration officials to provide proper treatment to the injured.
The DCP expressed apprehension that the incident took place as the SUV driver dozed off at some point due to the long distance, which led to the accident. “The deceased have been identified as Somnath (28), Ishwari Prasad Jaiswal (56), Santosh Soni (55), Bhagirathi Jaiswal (43), Saurabh Soni (55), Ajay Banjare (55), Ganga Das Verma (54), Shiv Rajput (60), Deepak Verma and Raju Shahu, all residents of Korba in Chhattisgarh,” he said.
