Why big-fish manage to go scot-free in illegal drug trade?

To question the dexterity of J&K’s investigation agencies is out of question because these have the commendable track record of cracking many blind cases and unraveling the truth and exposing the criminals behind difficult cases including the terror strikes, murder plots, robberies and many others but when the cases related to big drug cartels and syndicates come, the output seems not to be up to the mark.

The subtle response of cops against catching the big fish involved in drugs supply and distribution is unfortunate and raises many doubts because no one can deny that lately J&K has become the den of drug mafias as huge quantities of narcotics consignments start their journey from this region before reaching other states as one could gauge well by the cases of seizures and several arrests of drug suppliers, who were taking the drugs outside the Union Territory.

It is really a big mystery that despite many arrests in the drugs related cases, the probing agencies have failed to reach up to the roots of this crime which is eating up the vitals of the society and ruining the forthcoming generation by making them mentally and physically weak, usurping their resources and money, and above all using the proceeds of this illegal business for disrupting peace in the region.

Like in many other cases, J&K Police has arrested two persons hailing from Delhi along with narcotics worth crores in Srinagar district. The total weight of the drug seizure is over 5 Kg, which is a huge quantity. Now, it becomes imperative for the probing party to go up to the bottom of the case and nab the persons who have supplied this consignment to these accused persons.

It is intriguing that in many cases in the past, the investigations never go beyond the arrests of the drug suppliers and peddlers, and their conviction. To eliminate this scourge from the society, it has become necessary that the big-fish behind these crimes should be caught, booked and convicted; otherwise there is no fun in filling up the dungeons with the petty drug peddlers as they are themselves vulnerable and are being trapped and used for flourishing this illegal trade of drugs.

Considering the aforesaid facts, one cannot rule out the connivance of some white-collared gentry (including cops, as many cases have emerged in which policemen were found involved in drug related crimes like the two in Jammu in this week only) with drug syndicates in helping or running this ‘business’ which has huge potential of generating money to the tune of crores and crores of rupees.

It is imperative that all aspects should be taken into account during the probe of such cases to ensure that no one should manage to go scot-free after committing and remaining a part of this heinous crime network.
