Jammu Tawi, Jun 17: For the first time, the Government of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has taken a tough decision for ensuring complete sanitation and cleanliness and has decided that people not cooperating in this initiative will not be entitled for power and water supply.

In this regard, the Government of India (GoI) has also given all the powers to the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of the J&K UT to take strict action against the people, households, hotels and Restaurants who do not cooperate in managing waste/garbage management under Solid Waste Management Act.

The strict action involves cutting off power and water supply of the households/hotels/Restaurants/factories etc besides other penalties.

Those found violating Solid Waste Management Act will not be entitled for power, water supply besides other penalties.

The General Administration Department (GAD) of the J&K has also issued an order in this this regard giving all powers to the DCs to take strict action against those who do not cooperate in Solid Waste Management.

Sources said that the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has constituted different teams to identify those responsible for not cooperating in maintaining cleanliness/sanitation in Jammu.

“The households/hotels/Restaurants and others not cooperating in maintaining sanitation/cleanliness will be treated as an act of an open littering,” Joint Commissioner, JMC, Abdul Sattar, informed the Northlines.

He said that different teams have been constituted in all the 75 wards falling under the jurisdiction of JMC to identify the violators.

“We have already identified the offenders/violators in all the 75 wards falling within our jurisdiction and lists of all these have been pasted at the prominent  in all the wards falling within the jurisdiction of the JMC,” the Joint Commissioner further informed.

The teams are still in the process of identifying the violators and soon a final list will be issued so that appropriate action could be taken, he said.

It may be mentioned that the JMC has since long started door to door garbage collection programme so that people do not throw garbage in the open.

However, the sources said that around 50-60% of the people in each ward still do not cooperate in garbage collection i.e waste management.
