SRINAGAR: The Srinagar and districts have registered 28.7 percent of the 72,557 crime cases registered by the police in the state.

As per the official figures of the police department, 2,52,374 crime cases have been registered in 22 districts of the state since 2007.

72,557 cases of them have been registered in the winter and summer capital alone during these years. 42,526 have been registered in Jammu district and 30,031 in Srinagar, contributed 28.7 percent of the total crime reported in the state.

Followed by district Rajouri (16866), Anantnag (14896), Baramulla (13,763) and (13354) in Budgam district. The lowest crime cases have been registered in region's district, (1125) cases.

A senior police official, said there were many factors responsible for highest rate of crime in twin capitals of the state. “Both these districts are most populated districts of the state. People from other areas and states also come to these districts for the employment who many a times also get involved in crimes,” the official said.

The highest number of cases as per police figures have been registered during 2013 (26907), followed by 2011 (26,590) cases.

While 26,558 and 26548 cases were registered in 2012 and 2016 respectively. The lowest number of cases was reported in 2008 when 22,549 crime cases were registered by the police.

Police officials said many crimes go unreported in the state either due to remoteness of the location or victims choose to stay silent out of fear or social stigma attached to some crimes like molestation, eve teasing or rape.

The highest number of cases have been registered under RPC in rioting, burglary, molestation, cruelty by husband, assault on public servant, attempt to murder, cheating, stabbing and eve teasing.

While under the special laws, most cases have been registered in NDPS, Excise Act, Arms Act, Essential Commodities Act and Explosive Act.

A senior police official said the crime rate is still low in the state when comparing with other Indian states. “There are some crimes which are increasing in the valley. Police is dealing with such crimes, but it is also the responsibility of the society how to reduce the number of crimes in the region,” the official said.
