Supreme Court stays new UGC caste equity regulations

New Delhi, Jan 29: The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the implementation of the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new anti-discrimination rules, citing concerns over their “vagueness” and potential for misuse. The court issued a formal notice to the government and the UGC, keeping the regulations on hold until further orders.

The UGC had notified the rules earlier this month, mandating all higher education institutions to form equity committees to address complaints of discrimination and promote inclusion. The committees are required to include members from Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, persons with disabilities, and women.

The regulations have sparked protests by students in several states, with critics warning that the rules could be misused if implemented in their current form. (Agencies)
