The Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH) of the University of Jammu has decided to debar assistant professor Shubhnandan Jamwal, accused of sexual harassment by his student, from holding any administrative position on the campus in future.
The decision was taken at a meeting of CASH, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Ramji Sharma on the campus here on Thursday. The official order in this regard is yet to be issued by the varsity administration.
Highly placed sources in the university said the Vice Chancellor “honoured” the recommendations of CASH in “totality”. The committee has recommended that the accused assistant professor be barred from holding administrative positions in future so that a strong message was sent across on the campus.
“The decision will have long-term implications. It will ensure that no faculty member dares to indulge in such an unprofessional conduct in future,” sources said.
The committee had submitted its report tothe Vice Chancellor on August 25. It had recommended “stringent and exemplary action” against the accused assistant professor, involved in sexual harassment of a student from his own department.
The case
A postgraduate student of Master in Computer Application, University of Jammu, had submitted a complaint of sexual harassment to the Vice Chancellor's office on May 17. She had alleged that she was sexually harassed by her teacher Shubhnandan Jamwal.
To substantiate her allegations, she had provided an audio recording of her conversation with the accused. The incident had sparked massive protests on the campus. The students had demanded strict action against the accused.
