Jammu Tawi: Progressive Peoples' Forum (PPF) Jammu organized a commemoratory function to pay homage to Comrade Sita Ram Yechury, General Secretary of CPI(M) who died on 12th of September. After paying tributes to Com Sita Ram, those present expressed views regarding his life and mission. Hari Chand Jalmeria Advocate, convener of the Forum conducted the proceedings of the function. Speaking on the occasion, he threw light on the life and contribution of Sita Ram in building unity of left, democratic and secular forces in India. Starting his political life from JNU as leader of Students Federation of India (SFI), he was elected as president of JNUSU and steered the students struggle during emergency period fighting against authoritarianism. He rose to the level of General Secretary of CPI(M) and steered the party for about nine years. He played an important role in building opposition unity to strengthen secularism and saving constitution. Yechury was an ideologue having deep understanding of the world affairs. His sudden death at this juncture, is a great loss to the progressive and democratic forces in the country, said Jalmeria. Jalmeria also remembered his early association with Yechury when he joined SFI in 1980 and Yechury used to visit from center to guide the state unit.
Com Rakesh Sharma, Com Ashwani Kapoor, Ratinder Koul, Subhash Mehta, Sanjay Kotwal, KK Koushal, Kuldip Singh, KK Rao, Shanker Singh Chib while paying homage to Com Yechury, stressed upon building unity of the progressive and left forces. It was resolved to carry ahead the mission of Yechury to achieve socialism in the country.
