For nearly nine decades, the Kambli family has played an integral role in bringing the deity to life through their artwork. Currently in its third generation, sculptor Santosh Kambli continues the family legacy of crafting the 14-foot statue with utmost devotion and precision. “We pour our soul into creating an idol that allows devotees to feel God's presence before them,” he shares.
The months-long process starts in June with rituals followed by shaping the distinctive figure known for its graceful physique and welcoming smile. Special care goes into achieving perfect proportions that magnify both grandeur and gentleness. Recent years have also seen experimentation with eco-friendlier materials for smaller idols to protect the environment.
Mumbai's rainy season poses unique challenges but disciplined preparation ensures the radiant colors remain intact for complete festivities. With copyright protection, the idol's unique style stands safeguarded for generations while allowing future innovation.
When asked about costs, Santosh prioritizes spiritual worth over profits. “Devotees come seeking blessings, not price tags. We strive for fair pricing so Lalbaugcha Raja's grace remains within all's reach.”
