    Ladakh constitutes screening committee to review cases of convicts eligible for special remission

    (), June 17: The administration of Ladakh Union Territory has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to review cases of  convicts eligible  for grant of special exemption as part of celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav– a series of events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of 's Independence.

    The General Administration Department of Ladakh UT has constituted a UT level inquiry committee headed by administrative secretary Home department to review cases of convicts eligible for grant of special exemption as per the guidelines issued by Ministry of Home Affairs under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.

    According to an order issued by General Administration Department, Ladakh UT, the committee shall also comprise of administrative secretary, department of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs and head of the department of Prisons.

    As per its terms of reference, the panel shall review the records and examine each case of all those eligible prisoners who fulfill the conditions for exemption as per guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

    The committee shall give its recommendation to the administration of Ladakh UT for grant of special exemption.

    The eligible prisoners shall be released in three phases- August 15, 2022 (75th anniversary of Independence Day), January 26, 2023 (Republic Day) and again on August 15, 2023.

    As per guidelines issued by the MHA, those convicted of certain crimes who have served at least 50% of their sentence will be granted remission in three phases, while those convicted of terror and crimes against women will be ineligible.
