NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha has extended the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bills till the first day of the last week of the Monsoon Session 2026. The move was approved through a voice vote in the House.
The legislation aims to introduce simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. The extension motion was moved by committee chairman P.P. Chaudhary for continued examination of the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The decision allows the panel more time to deliberate on the proposed electoral reforms and submit its report. (Agencies)
