Jammu Tawi, July 11: The Special Crime Wing (SCW) of the Crime Branch Jammu has registered a case against a Jammu resident for allegedly cheating a local youth on the pretext of arranging a study visa to Australia.
According to officials, the accused, identified as Puneet Singh, a resident of Upper Gadigarh, Jammu, allegedly collected ₹3,58,040 through multiple online transactions between July and October 2025 after promising to secure an Australian study visa for the complainant.
The complainant alleged that the accused later called him to Delhi on the basis of a purported biometric appointment and office letter, which was subsequently found to be forged. The accused is presently reported to be residing in Sydney, Australia, and has allegedly failed to return the money despite repeated requests.
A preliminary verification conducted by the Special Crime Wing prima facie established the offence of cheating. Accordingly, a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Police Station Special Crime Wing, Jammu, and further investigation has been initiated.
The SCW has advised the public to verify the credentials of visa consultants and agents before making payments and to remain cautious of fake offer letters, biometric appointment documents and other fraudulent immigration-related communications.
