Javelin Thrower Finds Relief by Breaking 80m Mark ahead of Olympics

At the recent Inter-State Athletics Championships, javelin thrower Kishore Jena managed to surpass the 80m mark for the first time this season. This achievement brought him some relief after struggling in previous competitions since winning a silver medal at the Asian Games in 2018.

Jena, who had secured his spot at the upcoming Paris Olympics by winning silver in Hangzhou four years ago, threw 80.84m and 80.47m in his second and third attempts at the meet. This was enough to earn him third place on the day behind Sahil Silwal, who achieved a new personal best of 81.81m, and Vikant Malik who took silver with 81.74m.

However, Jena has faced difficulties after his success internationally. His best throw had only been 78.47m in the past three events. Domestically, he could only manage 75.49m at the Federation Cup in May. This led to questions about his fitness levels from observers.

While the athlete acknowledges the criticism is justified given high expectations of him, he is trying to focus on training despite battles with niggling injuries. An ankle issue prevented him from competing at his full potential but medical advice confirms it isn't serious.

Breaching 80m in this competition has lifted some weight off Jena's shoulders by rebuilding his confidence before the major championship in Paris. He will look to continue improving at next week's Diamond League meeting as he builds towards defending his Olympic medal.
