It is really intriguing that even the Traffic Police Department is concerned over the rising number of deaths due to road accidents in Jammu region and is taking much pain to find panacea against this crucial problem.
In this regard, the DIG Traffic Jammu Range has made a startling revelation claiming that every year nearly 600 people die in road accidents in Jammu region including on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Such a huge number of deaths on roads is a matter of grave concern because all these fatalities are avoidable if people, authorities and the road edifice act ideally, which sadly is not the case leading to loss of precious lives.
The aforesaid officer has taken a serious note of the situation and has analytically gauged the things because his statement over the issue is resourceful and shows plenty of acumen. He has genuinely admitted that increase in challans and other penal actions against wrongful drivers is not bringing desired changes as far as making roads a safer place therefore he has strongly batted for focusing on awareness campaigns and educating people as far as possible.
No doubt the stance of the traffic police officer is quite meaningful but there is another aspect which could be addressed skillfully to reduce the accidents on Jammu roads. It is necessary that the traffic authorities should prioritize education before issuing driving licenses to enhance road safety in this part of the UT. It is likely that comprehensive training ‘capsules' that cover traffic rules, defensive driving techniques, and the consequences of reckless behaviour can significantly reduce accident rates.
By ensuring that drivers are well-informed and equipped with the necessary skills, authorities can foster a culture of responsible driving. This proactive approach is crucial, as it addresses not just the symptoms of road accidents but also their root causes, ultimately making Jammu's roads safer for everyone.
Reportedly, about 12,000 vehicles ply daily on highway besides more number of vehicles on other vital roads of the region thus making it critical for the authorities to ensure that all the drivers of these vehicles should have the skills to drive with utmost care and good patience. As this can change the scenario or else the people will sadly continue to lose their near and dear ones as the recent accidents in Nagrota had descended pall of gloom among the families of deceased youths belonging to different areas in Jammu region.
