In an alleged misuse of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing scheme in Sunderbani Block, financially well-off individuals are being geo-tagged for benefits meant for the poor.

According to sources, around 150 files have been deposited at the Block Development Office related to the PMAY scheme under the Nala Panchayat.

However, local residents alleged that several affluent individuals, some owning multiple shops and valuable properties, have been included in the scheme despite government guidelines barring financially stable families from availing these benefits being ineligible.

“Government workers are geo-tagging houses of individuals who already possess permanent residences, multiple vehicles, and businesses worth crores,” maintained sources, adding that some beneficiaries have allegedly submitted false affidavits stating that no member of their household is employed.

A government official, wishing anonymity, stated, “We have received around 100 to 150 applications under the scheme, but we are following due process.”

However, local residents argued that genuine beneficiaries are being overlooked while better-of individuals are receiving preferential treatment.

The locals have demanded intervention from senior authorities, including the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir and the Commissioner of the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department.

Meanwhile, sources alleged that misuse of funds could cost the government crores, depriving the genuinely needy of housing.

They further said that the administration must verify the financial backgrounds of applicants.

“Anti-Corruption Bureau is expected to examine potential irregularities in the implementation of the scheme,” said sources.
