The opening extravaganza of the Paris Paralympics 2022 is set to captivate the world today with its innovative showcase held outside the stadium premises for the first time in history. Champs-Elysees Boulevard and Place de la Concorde in the French capital will light up to mark the commencement of 11 days of excellence, enthusiasm and equality in sports.
The Indian contingent comprising over 100 members including 52 athletes will be an integral part of the momentous launch event. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil and shot putter Bhagyashri Jadhav will have the honor of being the flag bearers for the country. However, some athletes with competitions slated for August 29 have opted out of the parade to focus on their preparation.
The shooting team consisting of 10 members is also giving the parade a miss to concentrate on their events scheduled for the very next day. “Those with matches on August 29 will not participate in the opening ceremony. The shooting team will also not take part in the parade,” confirmed Paralympic Committee of India President Deepa Malik.
Nonetheless, India's strong representation of 106 members – 52 athletes and 54 officials – will still march proudly during the parade of nations. The evening celebrating the resilence and skills of para-athletes promises to be a grand visual treat for one and all.
