Promising footballer passes away after collapsing on field
In a tragic turn of events, Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo passed away after collapsing during a match last week. The 27-year-old defender had suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for his club Nacional in a Copa Libertadores clash against Brazilian giants Sao Paulo on August 22nd.
Izquierdo fell to the ground suddenly in the 84th minute without any involvement with other players. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in an ambulance after receiving medical attention on the field. The young footballer had been undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of a renowned hospital in Sao Paulo, but sadly could not recover from the medical emergency.
Nacional announced the sad news of Izquierdo’s demise on their official channels on Tuesday. “It is with immense sadness that we share the unfortunate passing of our beloved player. All of us at Nacional are grieving this irreplaceable loss,” the statement mentioned. South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL and Sao Paulo also condoled the tragic event, with the latter calling it a sad day for the beautiful game.
Izquierdo had represented Uruguay’s top clubs Cerro, Peñarol, Wanderers and Liverpool in his career spanning over a decade. The defender was seen as a promising talent and had cemented his place in Nacional’s first team set up.
