Jammu Tawi: The Department of Political Science, in collaboration with the NSS unit of Government Degree College (GDC) Paloura, celebrated UN Human Rights Day on Wednesday. The day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, setting global standards for protecting human rights.
This year’s theme, “Our rights, our future, right now,” was highlighted during the event. Prof. Amit Bhalla, Head of the Department of Political Science, delivered a detailed lecture on the significance of the day. He explained the relationship between India’s Fundamental Rights, enshrined in Part III of the Indian Constitution, and human rights. He also discussed the legal provisions under the UDHR and the Human Rights Act of 1993, emphasizing that human rights are inalienable and essential for a life of dignity.
Dr. Kulvinder Kour, Principal of the college, presided over the program. She underscored the importance of equal rights for all human beings, free from discrimination, and highlighted the role of enforcement agencies such as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Supreme Court, and High Courts in upholding these rights. She praised the faculty and students for their active participation in the program and their understanding of the concept of human rights.
Three first-semester B.A. students also shared their views on human rights as outlined in the UN Charter. The event, attended by a large number of students and faculty members, proved to be an enriching learning experience.
