Former J&K Cooperative MD Convicted for Forging Birth Date to Illegally Extend Service

Srinagar, Nov 4: A court in Srinagar has convicted former Managing Director of J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Bank, Mohammad Shafi Banday, for forging his date of birth to unlawfully extend his tenure in service.

According to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir, the former MD manipulated his birth date from June 26, 1932, to September 1, 1939, using a fake certificate to remain in service seven years beyond the legal limit.

The Court of the City Judge, Srinagar, found Banday guilty under Sections 420, 468, and 471 of the RPC, sentencing him to two years of simple imprisonment on each count and a fine of ₹5,000 per offence. The sentences will run concurrently.

The case began after a complaint alleged that Banday falsified his records to secure an illegal service extension. A Crime Branch investigation confirmed the manipulation, revealing that his actions caused wrongful gain to himself and a loss to the state exchequer.

Following a full trial, the court upheld the prosecution’s findings, leading to his conviction. (Agencies)
