Delhi polls concludes peacefully, records 57.89 pc voter turnout

Exit Polls predict comfortable win for BJP in Delhi, AAP on way out

New Delhi, Feb 5: Voting for the 70-member Delhi assembly, that witnessed a triangular contest, concluded peacefully, with the turnout recorded at around 57.89 percent on Wednesday.

Thanking the people of Delhi for participating in the election, the Election Commission said the election process was “smooth, free, and fair”.

As per the ECI’s Voter Turnout App, the North East district recorded the highest voter turnout of 63.83 percent, while New Delhi registered 54.72 percent.

Voter turnout for the other districts are — Central 55.74%, East: 60.11%, North: 57.48%, North West 58.05%, Shadara 61.35% and South 55.72%.

Similarly among the assembly constituencies, Mustafabad witnessed a highest voter turnout of 66.68 percent and Karol Bagh had a lowest polling figure of 47.40 percent.

As the voting came to an end, fate of 699 candidates including Chief Minister Aatishi, her predecessor and Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, BJP leaders Parvesh Verma and Ramesh Bidhuri and prominent Congress names like Sandeep Dikshit and Alka Lamba lay sealed in the EVM.

Earlier, amidst great enthusiasm and a festive spirit, polling began at 7 a.m. to elect a new government for the crucial Union Territory that comprises the country’s national capital.

Prominent personalities including Union Ministers S Jaishankar and Hardeep Singh Puri, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, AAP stalwarts Kejrwal, Aatishi, Sisodia, BJP’s Manoj Tiwari, Virendra Sachdeva, Praveen Khandelwal expressed their democratic choice.

The counting of votes will take place on Saturday i.e February 8.

Meanwhile, Multiple Exit Polls on Wednesday predicted BJP winning the tightly-contested Delhi assembly election comfortably while ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seen losing the electoral battle.

The pollsters have forecast a complete rout of the Congress party with the grand old party barely in the race. Most exit polls pegged Congress tally at 0-2 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly.

The BJP which is seen making a comeback in Delhi after nearly 27 years is projected to win 35-60 seats. Among various pollsters, Peoples Pulse has pegged 51-60 seats for the BJP, the highest tally for the party. It has projected 10-19 seats for AAP while zero seats for the Congress.

Matrize has predicted a neck-and-neck contest between BJP and AAP. While it has projected 35-40 seats for BJP, AAP is seen winning 32-37 seats.

People’s Insight has predicted 40-44 seats for BJP while AAP is seen winning 25-29 seats.

It may be noted that exit polls have in the past proved wrong on many occasions. Most pollsters went horribly wrong in predicting the results of the last Lok Sabha election. Recently, they miserably failed to get the pulse of voters in the Haryana assembly election.

There is a triangular contest in the Delhi assembly polls with all the three major players BJP, AAP and Congress claiming victory.

Delhi being the national capital, its assembly election results are likely to have an impact elsewhere.

The ruling AAP has been in power in Delhi for over a decade. The party had won a thumping majority in the last assembly election in 2020 bagging 62 seats. The BJP had won eight seats while Congress could not open its account.
