CHANDIGARH, June 18: Two men arrested from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the daylight murder of a pharmacy cashier in Chandigarh allegedly attempted to escape from police custody while being brought to the city on transit remand, police sources said on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Aryan and Sunny, allegedly tried to flee on Wednesday night after the police vehicle carrying them met with a minor accident, injuring the driver, shortly after entering Chandigarh.
According to sources, police warned the duo before opening fire when they attempted to escape. Both sustained bullet injuries to their legs and were admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The two had been arrested from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the June 13 murder of 45-year-old pharmacy cashier Janki Das, who was shot dead in broad daylight inside a pharmacy in Sector 11.
Police had earlier said two masked assailants entered the pharmacy and opened fire on Das, while a third accomplice waited outside on a motorcycle. The attackers fled immediately after the shooting.
The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed at the pharmacy. Police said the motive behind the murder is yet to be established, and further investigation is underway. (Agencies)
