Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz once again showed his never-say-die attitude as he battled past Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in four sets to book his place in the Wimbledon final for the second year running. Though the 19-year-old struggled at the onset and found himself a set down against the former world number one, he stayed calm and composed to slowly turn the match in his favor.
Alcaraz trailed in the early stages as nerves appeared to get the better of him against Medvedev’s relentless defense. However, he refused to concede and upped his intensity in the second set, breaking early then holding firm to level the match. With renewed confidence, the Spaniard started to unleash his trademark shotmaking, launching a barrage of winners off both wings.
While Medvedev continued to make life difficult with his counterpunching abilities, Alcaraz showcased why he is already regarded as one of the best problem-solvers on Tour. Even when not at his fluent best, he found solutions to edge past crucial points and maintain control of proceedings. This ability to grind out wins despite not playing his absolute best has characterized his run to another Wimbledon final.
Following another comeback triumph over last year’s US Open champion, Alcaraz will seek to defend his title against 22-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic on Sunday. After defeating Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, the legendary Serbian stands in his way of back-to-back Wimbledon trophies. However, if his never-say-die spirit is anything to go by, Alcaraz will back himself to overcome any obstacle in his path of continuing his rapid rise to the top of the men’s game.
