Madhepura (Bihar), June 20: Police in Bihar’s Madhepura district have arrested a man for allegedly tampering with the national flag by replacing the Ashoka Chakra with a crescent and star.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Dukhan, a resident of Mirganj Ward No. 10 under Murliganj police station limits, was arrested after an FIR was registered under relevant legal provisions.
According to police, the incident came to light around 10 p.m. on Thursday after locals noticed that a tricolour displayed near a pan shop in Mirganj had been defaced. The altered flag was reportedly installed during the night, and the matter was brought to the attention of Murliganj police by a local resident.
Station House Officer Pramod Kumar reached the spot with a police team and recovered the flag from a bamboo pole along the roadside. The flag was seized in the presence of independent witnesses, and a seizure memo was prepared.
Based on inquiries with local residents, police identified Mohammad Dukhan as the suspect and took him into custody from his residence.
Police said desecration of the national flag is a cognizable offence. The accused has been sent to judicial custody, while further investigation into the case is underway.
