Bengali actress calls for investigation into misconduct allegations
Top Bengali actress Ritabhari Chakraborty has alleged that sexual abuse is prevalent in the Bengali entertainment industry and has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to initiate an investigation on similar lines as the Hema Commission in Kerala. The Hema Commission was set up in Kerala to look into allegations of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry.
In a social media post addressed to the CM, Chakraborty referred to the findings of the Hema Commission report which uncovered instances of misconduct in the Malayalam industry. She said that many accounts from the Bengali industry also mirror experiences of herself and other female colleagues. Without naming anyone, she accused “certain individuals” in the industry of behaving inappropriately and urging for action against repeat offenders.
Chakraborty cited how aspiring female actors often face discomfort due to the misuse of power dynamics and lack of accountability in the work culture. She questioned the need to wait for another assault case before steps are taken to safeguard women in the field. The popular actress called out the common mindset that perceives actresses as mere objects.
Endorsing Rabhi Chakraborty's demand, veteran actor Sreelekha Mitra had also previously indicated awareness of misconduct allegations against a few Bengali directors without providing specifics. Both actresses have urged female victims to courageously step forward without fear of retaliation from influential perpetrators.
Chakraborty has acted in several acclaimed Bengali films over her career. Only time will tell if her appeal will prompt the state government to investigate lingering issues or spur overdue changes in the workplace culture.
