South Africa-Born Andries Gous’ Heroic Knock Almost Helps USA Pull Off An Upset Against Proteas
The Super 8 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup witnessed an exciting encounter between South Africa and USA in Antigua on Wednesday. Chasing a challenging total of 195, the Americans, led by South Africa-born Andries Gous, came incredibly close to a stunning victory before eventually falling short by 18 runs.
Batting first, the South African batsmen fired on all cylinders. Opening batter Quinton de Kock found his mojo back with a superb 74, while skipper Aiden Markram smashed a brisk 46 to lay the foundation. late cameos from Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs ensured the Proteas posted a competitive 194.
However, the USA bowlers made the contest interesting. Left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/21. Fellow Indian-American Harmeet Singh also chipped in with two scalps. Their tight bowling show put pressure on the Proteas.
Chasing what seemed a gettable total, the USA got off to a steady start. But they suffered a mini collapse losing three wickets for just 34 runs between overs 7-13. This is when Gous took centerstage. Born in Bloemfontein, the 30-year-old anchored the chase with a outstanding unbeaten 80 off 47 balls.
He found an able ally in Harmeet Singh as the duo stitched a 91-run stand to bring the chase back on track. Their aggressive batting kept the Proteas attention throughout. But Kagiso Rababa delivered a superb over, conceding just two runs and taking a wicket to tilt the match in favor of South Africa. Despite Gous’ heroics, the asking rate proved too much in the end.
