    Amarnath Pilgrims Overcharged Daily

In many Indian cities, auto-rickshaws remain a vital mode of transport for the common man. However, the lack of regulation and accountability often leads to exploitation, especially during peak tourist seasons or religious events. Overcharging by auto-rickshaw drivers has become a pervasive menace, troubling locals and visitors alike. In the absence of metered fares and proper enforcement, many drivers demand arbitrary rates, turning short-distance travel into a costly affair. This unethical practice not only burdens the daily commuter but also brings disrepute to the city’s image.

Jammu, currently witnessing a massive influx of devotees due to the ongoing Shri Amarnath Yatra, is no exception. Thousands of pilgrims from across the country arrive daily basis in Jammu, significantly increasing traffic and demand for local transportation. Taking undue advantage of this, auto and e-rickshaw drivers in the city have resorted to overcharging passengers, especially at key points such as the bus stand, railway station, airport, and other public hubs. As per reports, the fares being demanded are several times higher than the standard rates, even for short routes.

The RTO office has, in the last two days alone, booked 30 cases for overcharging, the majority involving e-rickshaws. In instances where a fare of Rs 20 to Rs 30 is justified, commuters are reportedly being charged Rs 100 or more. For longer routes, the rates are inflated even further, adding to the distress of pilgrims and common citizens alike. Such exploitation of a religious gathering, which should be marked by service and respect, is deeply disappointing.

The administration must treat this as a serious issue. While warnings and fines have been issued in some cases, stronger action is needed. Establishing fixed fare charts, increasing awareness among passengers, deploying enforcement teams at major transit points, and ensuring digital payments with receipts could be practical steps to curb this malpractice. More importantly, instilling a sense of ethical responsibility among transport operators is essential.

Unchecked overcharging during the sacred Amarnath Yatra not only exploits the sentiments of the pilgrims but also tarnishes the image of Jammu as a welcoming host. Pilgrims who travel from far-off places with devotion and faith should not be subjected to such harassment at the hands of greedy transport operators. It is imperative for the administration to act swiftly and decisively to bring such malpractices under control. The sanctity of the Yatra must be upheld by ensuring that pilgrims are treated with respect, fairness, and dignity throughout their spiritual journey.
