AI’s Dark Side: A Descent to Doom?

Decades ago, we envisioned that Artificial Intelligence would transform our lives forever. We imagined that robots would perform all sorts of tasks from basic errands to advanced

automation, and computers would become smart and make us more efficient. And rightly so,the evolution of Web 4.0 showcased the use of virtual and augmented reality, and content

tailored to user preferences with AI for more personalized interactions, among other applications.

Visionaries like Alan Turing and John McCarthy knew AI wouldn’t just be a fad when they

started working on it in the 1950s. With a vision to create intelligent machinery, the pioneers weren’t unaware of its potential ethical and societal implications. However, no one could have predicted that there would be such a sharp disconnect between the initial intent and the application of AI as we see today. A year ago, the deepfakes of a few celebrities went viral. This shows how the application of AI has gone grossly wrong at the hands of its users.

The underlying issue behind this misuse of artificial intelligence tools is ignorance of such

actions’ consequences and potential risks. While AI transforms workflows across various industries like healthcare, education, e-commerce, entertainment, etc., it also poses serious threats associated with scams, data mismanagement, audience manipulation, etc.

The way that our so-called “intelligent machines” are being used these days is concerning. We cannot afford to use a wait-and-watch approach anymore.

The Case of 2024 General Elections

The 2024 general elections in India saw a heightened usage of AI technologies for voter

engagement and spreading awareness. Our national political parties also used AI to create

content in multiple languages for voters in diverse regions. But this also means that it is very easy to manipulate the words and ultimately the intended message in such situations.

Concepts related to the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence are somewhat

still confined to certain professions like information technology, media, etc. But today, anyone with a basic understanding of these powerful tools can intentionally or unintentionally contribute to the spread of misinformation due to a lack of proper knowledge.

    A Global Crisis

On a global level, the problem of misinformation can hamper peace and harmony among

nations. Currently, there is no proper global governance structure to mitigate the threats

posed by using artificial intelligence tools for geopolitical interference. Moreover, the carbon footprint due to the extensive energy consumption of massive computers in data centers is a serious concern.

Ultimately, not all countries are resourceful enough to jump on the AI bandwagon, which will deepen the digital divide internationally.

A holistic approach is mandatory to mitigate the risks and utilize AI for good reasons. The global

landscape needs adequate regulatory frameworks for societal values and human well-being. For this, starting at the educational level to raise awareness about the best use cases of AI and its limitations can be a meaningful step in the right direction. Further, developments in artificial tools should be ethical, transparent, accountable, and fair.

Attempts should be made to keep AI unbiased and foolproof. The future of AI is in our hands, and it is up to us to shape it wisely so that it contributes to a better future for us.
