    JK plans to modernize prisons, equip IT based aids

    Tawi, Feb 4: Jammu & is working on a major plan to modernize its 14-functional prisons with introduction of video conferencing facility for trial/remand purpose, e-Mulaqat facility & Prison Inmate Calling System, and establishment of modern interview rooms in jails.

    According to the official sources as part of the plan, prisons in J&K will introduce more IT based aids to ensure better security and surveillance.

    At present there are 14 functional prisons which include 2 Central Jails, 9 District Jails, 1 Special Jail & 2 Sub Jails. Against a lodgement capacity of 2830 inmates, the prisons in J&K are accommodating more than 3600 inmates.

    The Department endeavours to adopt modern for security & surveillance, introduce progressive correctional programmes and develop futuristic infrastructure in Jails. Our aim is to provide living conditions in Prisons compatible to human dignity & comparable to the best in the country with a focus on accommodation,

    Recently DGP Prisons, VK Singh during an official function has said that the Prisons department is working towards making jails more tech savvy as part of the reform and modernization process.

    He had said that these experiments are also being done in foreign jails and there are examinations and speech competitions along with studies on Mahatma Gandhi's ideas.

    On making improvements in raising the standard of living of inmates, ensuring the safety of women inmates and their children, the Lt Governor had said during a recent programme that that committed efforts are being made to ensure that the prisons are modernized according to the changing circumstances of the time.
