Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was a great ideologue, thinker, and advocate of Akhand Bharat. He was a staunch opponent of the special status under Article 370 of the Constitution and a strong proponent of a united India. Mukherjee laid down his life for the noble cause of the fuller integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India. He was a visionary leader and an advocate of Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan, Ek Nishan, besides supporting an India free from caste discrimination.

He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh after resigning from the Nehru government. Mukherjee opposed the permit system that continued in Jammu and Kashmir even after Independence and the state’s accession to India. Defying the system, he entered Jammu and Kashmir without a permit and died under mysterious circumstances, sacrificing his life for the cause of complete integration.
The seeds of integration were sown by Dr. Mukherjee, whose vision was a united India and the complete assimilation of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country while preserving its identity. His political foresight, leadership, and commitment to national unity remain widely acknowledged.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi translated Mukherjee’s long-cherished vision into reality by abrogating Article 370 on August 5, 2019, thereby ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and fully integrating it with India. The decision is regarded by its supporters as historic and transformative. Mukherjee is remembered for his vision, while Modi is credited with implementing it.
Mukherjee was a key architect of modern India whose contribution to national unity and integrity can neither be underestimated nor belittled. A visionary statesman, educationist, and fearless parliamentarian, he consistently raised issues concerning the nation and its people. His ideas continue to influence India’s political and national discourse.
Prime Minister Modi fulfilled Mukherjee’s dream 66 years after his martyrdom. Mukherjee championed social harmony and advocated one nation, one Constitution, and one flag. His martyrdom in Kashmir while fighting for complete integration remains a defining chapter in India’s political history.
Mukherjee believed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir should actively participate in India’s socio-economic and political development. He envisioned a discrimination-free Jammu and Kashmir, and the post-2019 changes are viewed by many as efforts towards achieving that objective.
The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand has stated that Prime Minister Modi fulfilled Dr. Mukherjee’s vision. Mukherjee was a true patriot and champion of democracy who believed that the benefits of development should reach the last person in society. He worked relentlessly on several national issues, including his opposition to Article 370, and never compromised on his principles.
Dr. Mukherjee once delivered a powerful speech in Parliament opposing Article 370. He, along with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, believed that Jammu and Kashmir was not merely a piece of land but an integral part of India’s civilisational identity. He firmly held that India’s unity was non-negotiable and stood for a united, strong, developed, and discrimination-free nation.
Today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is making significant strides towards becoming a strong and developed nation. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has said that Jammu and Kashmir’s achievements after the abrogation of Article 370 are guided by Dr. Mukherjee’s dream and Prime Minister Modi’s resolve. Mukherjee wanted the people of Jammu and Kashmir to participate fully in the national mainstream of development and nation-building, and the Union Territory is witnessing rapid socio-economic and technological progress.
Dr. Mukherjee also left a lasting imprint on India’s intellectual, educational, cultural, and industrial development. He played an important role in laying the foundation of a self-reliant India.
To sum up, it can be said that contemporary India has been shaped significantly by the vision of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and the resolve and commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
