Centre Targets Construction of Over 26,000 Km Rural Roads in FY27

NEW DELHI, June 18: The Centre has set a target to construct more than 26,000 kilometres of rural roads during the financial year 2026-27, allocating over ₹18,900 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and other rural connectivity initiatives.

The target was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Rural Development Secretary Rohit Kansal to assess the progress of rural road connectivity projects. Senior officials from several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, participated in the meeting.

The Secretary stressed the need to provide last-mile connectivity to all remaining unconnected habitations and directed states to expedite pending works under PMGSY and PM-JANMAN, with special focus on villages inhabited by Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

The meeting also reviewed the Road Connectivity Project for Left Wing Extremism-affected areas and instructed states to ensure timely completion of all sanctioned road projects in these sensitive regions.

Emphasising quality construction and proper maintenance, the Centre urged states to strengthen field inspections and make full use of the e-MARG platform for real-time monitoring and upkeep of rural roads. (Agencies)
