NEW DELHI, May 12: Authorities have introduced a QR code-based verification system for officials conducting door-to-door surveys for Census 2027 to curb rising cyber fraud and impersonation cases.
The system will be implemented in areas under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi from May 16. Enumerators and supervisors will carry appointment letters and identity cards embedded with QR codes, allowing residents to verify their authenticity by scanning them.
Officials from the Office of the Registrar General and Census said the move aims to enhance security amid growing incidents of fraudsters posing as government or law enforcement personnel using fake documents and digital tactics.
The measure comes as concerns rise over scams such as “digital arrest” and fake census messages circulating online. Authorities said the QR system will help build trust and ensure safe interaction between residents and survey staff.
Meanwhile, over 93,000 self-enumerations were recorded recently, with a completion rate of 82.73 percent. Enumerators will verify self-enumeration IDs during field visits and collect details afresh if discrepancies arise.
Officials said the multi-layered verification process is expected to make the census exercise more reliable and secure for households. (Agencies)
