New Delhi, March 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his greetings to the nation on the sacred occasion of Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, emphasising the enduring relevance of the Jain spiritual leader’s teachings in contemporary society.
In a message posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said, “Best wishes on the sacred occasion of Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak. The life and teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir continue to illuminate the path of truth, non-violence and compassion.”
He further underlined that Mahavir’s principles are not only spiritually enriching but also hold deep significance in addressing modern-day challenges. “His ideals are spiritually uplifting and also deeply relevant in today’s world,” Modi noted, adding that the emphasis on equality and kindness serves as a reminder of collective responsibility.

Mahavir Jayanti, one of the most important festivals for the Jain community, marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Celebrated with devotion and reverence across India, the occasion typically includes prayers, processions, charitable acts, and reflections on Mahavir’s teachings.
Lord Mahavir, who lived in the 6th century BCE, is regarded as a key figure in shaping Jain philosophy. His teachings centered on ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence), ‘aparigraha’ (non-possessiveness), and ‘anekantavada’ (multiplicity of viewpoints), principles that continue to influence ethical and spiritual thought worldwide.
The Prime Minister’s message comes as communities across the country observe the festival with renewed focus on peace, harmony, and compassion—values that resonate strongly in an increasingly complex global landscape.
