The concerned authorities should take all the stakeholders into confidence before taking any further decision on the Ropeway Project proposed for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine in Reasi District. As the Sangarsh Samiti constituted to oppose the proposal in an organized manner is adamant over the issue, it becomes imperative for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to go for via media in the matter and convince those opposing this project.
There is dire need to understand that the authorities have no vested interest in creating such a kind of edifice, rather it will enable old and infirm to carry out pilgrimage with convenience, which is in the interest of all.
Reportedly, the holy town of Katra witnessed a massive protest as members of the Sangarsh Samiti opposed the proposed ropeway project from Tarakote. Sangharsh Samiti members were of the opinion that the ropeway project would severely diminish the religious and spiritual significance of the traditional pilgrimage. They emphasized that the yatra is not merely a journey but a sacred spiritual experience which they believe will be adversely affected if the ropeway is implemented. There is no doubt in the fact that traditional way of carrying out this pilgrimage used to be a satisfying experience but this doesn’t means that the area should not be developed at all because the proposed ropeway has become the need of the hour due to the convenience it promises to physically challenged people and those having tighter schedules.
Earlier also, the helicopter service was also introduced keeping these aspects in mind, and the response was overwhelming. As the matter has become crucial, there is a need to handle the same with care, patience and open-mindedness.
The concerns of those opposing the ropeway cannot be brushed aside by out rightly ignoring their plight but looking into the demand of the changing times, practical solutions to make the pilgrimage accessible to everyone, especially the elderly, sick and differently-abled devotees is also necessary and cannot be overlooked.
It is therefore imperative that the concerned authorities should call the entities against the move of bringing a ropeway in the region and win their confidence through meaningful discussions. Holding a dialogue to remove the misunderstandings is the right way to resolve the logjam and ensure justice to one and all.
All said and done, by taking everyone into confidence the solution can be realized that would serve both devotion and convenience in the larger public interest.
