LUCKNOW, Jan 6: In a fresh twist to the case involving a resident doctor of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) accused of sexually exploiting a colleague, police on Tuesday said the absconding accused had allegedly coerced his wife to convert to Islam before their marriage in February 2025.
Police have intensified efforts to trace the accused, Rameez Uddin Nayak, who remains on the run, and have increased the reward for his arrest to ₹50,000.
Nayak, who was posted in the pathology department at KGMU, is accused of sexually exploiting a woman colleague on the pretext of marriage, pressuring her to convert to Islam, and blackmailing her. The complainant alleged that Nayak had claimed to be unmarried and promised to marry her.
According to investigators, Nayak met his wife—also a doctor—while studying in Agra. In her statement to the police, she alleged that in February 2025, Nayak forced her to convert to Islam before taking her to Pilibhit, where their marriage was solemnised.
As the probe widened, police identified and arrested several individuals allegedly involved in facilitating the conversion and marriage process. These include Nayak’s parents, a local cleric, and a witness from Pilibhit.
His parents, Salimuddin and Khadija, were arrested on Monday from the Thakurganj area of Lucknow. Police said the investigation has revealed the alleged active involvement of Nayak’s family members in the entire episode.
Based on the statement of the first wife, police have added charges related to criminal conspiracy, assault, and intimidation to the case.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have stepped up the manhunt for Nayak. Police said inputs obtained from his parents after their arrest have led investigators to several new locations where he may be hiding, and raids are being conducted to nab him. (Agencies)
