Srinagar, Jan 5: The ski resort of Gulmarg recorded the coldest night of the season on Monday as temperatures plunged to minus 8.8 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest minimum across Kashmir, officials said.
According to the Meteorological Department, all weather stations in the Valley continued to record sub-zero temperatures during the intervening night, with both north and south Kashmir witnessing a sharp dip. Gulmarg, in Baramulla district, saw the mercury fall from minus 6.5°C the previous night and also received about 4 cm of fresh snowfall in the last 24 hours.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registered a minimum temperature of minus 3.6°C, slightly lower than minus 3.2°C recorded a night earlier. In south Kashmir, tourist resort Pahalgam recorded minus 4.8°C compared to minus 4.0°C the previous night and also witnessed very light snowfall.
Other parts of south Kashmir remained cold, with Shopian recording minus 5.6°C and Pulwama settling at minus 4.2°C. Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 2.0°C, showing improvement from minus 4.0°C a night earlier, while Kokernag registered minus 1.2°C.
In north Kashmir, Kupwara recorded minus 1.8°C, slightly warmer than the minus 2.5°C witnessed on the preceding night.
The MeT department has forecast isolated light rain or snowfall at a few places over the next 24 hours, adding that no major weather disturbance is expected across Kashmir in the coming days. (Agencies)
