Srinagar, Oct 2: Ladakh Police has registered an FIR after the circulation of a deepfake video attributing a false statement to Ladakh Director General of Police (DGP) S.D. Singh Jamwal.
Police said it has come to their notice that a deepfake (digitally morphed) video is being circulated on social media platform X and a false statements are attributed to the Director General of Police, Jamwal.
“The video has been digitally manipulated using Deepfake Al with malicious intent and has the potential to disturb peace and harmony in the region,” Police said.
“On this, FIR 148 PS Leh under Sections 353(2), 356 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, and 66C and 66D of the IT Act, 2000 has been registered,” the police said that further investigation is underway to identify and arrest those behind the circulation of a deepfake video
District Police Leh has appealed to the public to always verify the content before sharing such videos.
Such misinformation shall be strictly dealt with as per law, police said.
Two days ago the PIB’s Fact Check unit said that a digitally altered video of DGP Ladakh is circulating on social media, in which he is making claims that Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on the directions of the Indian Defence Minister without any evidence. The PIB said that DGP Ladakh has made no such statement.
