Leh (Ladakh), Sept 27: Director General of Police (DGP) Ladakh, SD Singh Jamwal, on Saturday alleged activist Sonam Wangchuk’s links with Pakistan and raised questions about his visits to neighbouring countries amid the ongoing investigation into the September 24 Leh violence.
Addressing a press conference in Leh, DGP Jamwal said police had recently arrested a Pakistan PIO who was reportedly in contact with Wangchuk. “He had attended a Dawn event in Pakistan and also visited Bangladesh. Investigation is being done,” the DGP stated, raising a “big question mark” on Wangchuk’s international connections.
Jamwal accused Wangchuk of instigating the violent protests in Leh on September 24, which left four people dead and many civilians, police, and paramilitary officers injured. He alleged that “so-called environmental activists” had made provocative speeches, derailing ongoing talks with the Centre.
“An unfortunate incident occurred on September 24. There were attempts to sabotage these ongoing processes. The prime name here is Sonam Wangchuk, who has earlier delivered such statements and worked to derail the process,” DGP Jamwal said. He also noted ongoing investigations into Wangchuk’s funding under possible FCRA violations.
When asked about foreign involvement in the Leh unrest, Jamwal said two more individuals were apprehended, though it remains unclear if they were part of a larger design. He added that historical migration of Nepalese laborers in the region required further investigation.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail following his arrest under the National Security Act (NSA). His detention comes amid the chaotic protests in Leh, which included arson at a local BJP office, and followed the conclusion of his hunger strike.
Officials continue to probe Wangchuk’s role and connections in the violence, emphasizing strict action against those inciting unrest in the Union Territory. (Agencies)
