New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab’s flood-affected Gurdaspur district on September 9 to meet affected families and farmers, and review ongoing relief operations, the BJP Punjab unit announced on X.
The party said the PM’s visit reflects the Centre’s commitment to stand with the people of Punjab, assuring “every possible step” will be taken to support victims of the disaster.
Government sources indicated that Modi is also likely to tour other northern states hit hard by floods, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand, to assess the ground situation and relief measures.
Flood Impact in Punjab: Over 1,900 villages across 23 districts remain inundated, with 43 deaths reported and crops damaged on nearly 1.71 lakh hectares of farmland. Large areas of farmland are underwater, rivers are flowing above danger levels, and several highways remain blocked.
Wider Crisis in Northern States:
Himachal Pradesh has reported 355 deaths, 95 flash floods, 45 cloudbursts, and 132 major landslides since June 20. Damage is estimated at ₹3,787 crore, with 1,217 roads blocked, including key routes in Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, and Chamba.
Jammu & Kashmir remains cut off as landslides and heavy rains forced closure of the Jammu-Srinagar highway and other key routes.
Uttarakhand also continues to face disruptions due to monsoon-triggered flooding.
Relentless monsoon rains since June have claimed over 500 lives across northern India, leaving thousands displaced and critical infrastructure badly damaged. (Agencies)
