As India gears up to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, the nation is witnessing a renewed push to enhance its sporting ecosystem. States across the country are building world-class infrastructure, hiring professionals, and laying the groundwork for global competitiveness. But amid this national ambition, Jammu and Kashmir risks being left out of the frame.
The region, despite its vast reservoir of talent and youthful energy, continues to suffer from apathy in the sports sector. Infrastructure remains outdated, support systems are weak, and most crucially, there is a glaring shortage of trained professionals to guide and mentor aspiring athletes. Facilities that do exist are often in disrepair, lacking both modern equipment and regular maintenance. In many places, young players are left to fend for themselves—deprived of even the most basic resources and institutional support.
This isn’t a new problem, but one that has been allowed to fester over time. While many other regions are making strides toward sports excellence, Jammu and Kashmir appears to be stagnating. The spirit and potential of its youth are evident, but without access to structured training and proper facilities, that potential remains largely untapped.
The government’s initiative to establish Khelo India Centers across all districts of J&K is a commendable step. However, the mere existence of such centers does not guarantee success. Without skilled coaches, technical staff, and sustained funding, these centers risk becoming symbolic rather than transformative.
The situation is even more critical beyond the urban centers. In many rural districts, children with raw talent have little to no exposure to organized training. Their aspirations fade not due to lack of ability, but due to lack of opportunity—a loss not just for the region, but for the nation as a whole.
If India is serious about presenting itself as a future Olympic host, it cannot afford to ignore any part of the country. Inclusion must be at the heart of our Olympic vision. Jammu and Kashmir deserves not just equal attention, but focused investment to bring its youth into the national sporting mainstream.
It is imperative that the government urgently invests in developing world-class infrastructure in J&K, ensures timely appointment of skilled coaches, and maintains existing facilities. The youth of the region deserve a platform to showcase their talent—not just as participants but as future champions on the world stage. Jammu and Kashmir must not remain a blind spot in India’s Olympic vision.
